71 : into the fire / 포화 속으로

based on a true story of 71 soldier trainees who fought an impossible war against seasoned North Korean army during Korean War which broke out in 1950.

the film delicately depicts the fierce battle that teenage student soldiers fall into as they fight to protect the final defense line by themselves when under a surprise attack and their emotions and conflicts as they experience the grown-ups' war.

Using real people and events, the film exposes the personal and physical conflicts that these students faced when finding themselves on the last line of defence in Pohang girls’ middle school, needing to hold out until back up from other Korean troops and the Allies arrived.

a letter was found in the pocket of student soldier Lee Woo-geun who died while fighting in a battle to defend the Nakdong River. The letter, which the 16-year-old had failed to send off to his mother, read the following: "Mother, I killed a person. It was such a brutal death. Why do we have to go into war? I'm thinking frightening thoughts. I wish the war would end quickly and feel your warm embrace". Film "71: Into the Fire" starts with this letter.
